Week 5

Researching in stores, design retros and end of year reviews
January 31, 2020

๐ŸŽง Here's the music I've been listening to this week. New Daniel Avery collab with Alessandro Cortini ๐Ÿคค

๐ŸŽ™ podcasts I listened to: how China is upending western marketing preferences, Irene Au on scaling design teams in large organisations and Che Douglas on leading a transformation

๐Ÿ“– Nearly finished The Laws of Simplicity by John Meada. It gets better towards the end.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธphysio said I can start light running. Did 5k on the treadmill. BORING. Hate treadmills. Knee felt bad the day after ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ no meditation. Not a bad mood week, but had a Confidence wobble on Thursday with the pain in my knee and laptop issues. Just got a bit stroppy. Been poorly all week ย ๐Ÿคง

๐Ÿš€ ๐Ÿ‘ˆ goals this week:

  1. prepare for end of year reviews โœ…
  2. get relevant people involved in the membership design strategy - research plan, design patterns etc. โœ…
  3. identify what we want to learn from user research next week โœ…

๐Ÿš€ ๐Ÿ‘‰ goals next week:

  1. plan for strategy workshop next week
  2. make sure peeps are comfortable with what's next for the trial
  3. define design team structure with the rest of the principals - agree job descriptions

๐Ÿ”ฎ the design strategy has morphed into two different things this week: connecting the dots with account and defining design ways of working in membership. I've planned a big workshop to get 3 product design teams in one room to talk about expectations and map out user journeys for the former. Just need a room now. Can't book anywhere!

๐Ÿ—ฃ research in a store on Tuesday. I love visiting stores and talking to colleagues on the front line. We got some great insight and looking forward to us sharing insights with the wider team. Maisie had an idea to do a mural out of the insights on one of the walls near the kitchen. If we could do that that would be ace.

๐Ÿ“ loads of end of year reviews and community of practice chats this week. I like this stuff but itโ€™s hard to find balance with the product area work.

๐Ÿ” we had an all design team retro for 2019. We reflected on our successes and what we could work on. Highlights for me: winning over the exec over with design ways of working. But, personally, I felt the communities of practice and personal development took a bit of hit.

๐Ÿ‘‹ have a great weekend
